Total internet blackout in Afghanistan, a whole nation has been silenced.
Published on: Wed Oct 01 2025
On September 29, 2025, the Taliban terrorist regime controlling Afghanistan completely shut down internet access for the entire country, making its population ‘disappear’ from the rest of the world and paralyzing crucial services like communications, banking, and education, all in the name of ‘immorality’.
Regional interruptions were reported across the country from the beginning of September, with Cloudflare Radar tracking major traffic loss in multiple provinces leading up to the total escalation.
The Taliban claims this is an attempt to avoid ‘vice’ and that telecommunications will be fully restored ‘until further notice’. However, given their history of human rights violations, this appears to be a dangerous move to restrict information and silence the voices of their citizens.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has called on the Taliban to ‘immediately and fully restore nationwide Internet and telecommunications access,’ pointing to the catastrophic consequences this move could have for the Afghan people and the nation’s overall stability.
Unfortunately, this is a common pattern in countries where oppressive governments exploit their power over innocent people. It is a realistic scenario that something similar could happen in any democratic state, as long as we surrender our most important weapons: our voice and our knowledge of privacy.
At Serendipiware, we will continue the fight for a free and open internet. Regardless of our size. Thank you for being a part of this.
